My name is Matt Donahue, I’m a 3D artist and CGI modeler living in Toronto, Ontario. Though I am original from St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, and this is a little bit about me.
I attended a local college to earn my diploma in digital animation. While attending school I was consistently asked by my teachers to take on leadership roles such as technical director, and project manager, as they understood my work ethic, and organizational skills, and as such, knew I could keep us on target for deadlines. Upon graduation, I was invited to help out with more projects as a senior adviser. While under this role I helped the first year students complete a full short animation project in less than two months. Their fastest turn around to date
Upon graduation, I began working as a freelance artist and animator. I started making logos for small independent companies around town, I was even invited to give a talk about graphic design to local students during a charity convention. Despite this, the town I grew up in didn’t have a large demand for full-time artists, and the competition for the few jobs there were was rather fierce. I knew I would have to move away if I wanted to pursue this art as a career. So, I started teaching myself Maya to help flesh out my resume, and, it seemed to be the preferred 3D software of businesses in Canada. After about 6 months of online tutorials, and many late nights working, I finally got the call I had been waiting for, someone had seen my work and wanted to hire me
My first job as a CGI artist was intimidating, most of the people working there were 5 to 10 years my senior, and had years of experience. Then there was me, a self-taught 3D artist who had really only begun scratching the surface of this new software. A software, that I would now need to use every day, to make exact digital replicas of well known physical products. But, I was determined, and a quick learner, so I learned on the go. I tackled one problem then the next. Soon my projects came to have the fastest turnaround, I was given other people’s projects to lighten their loads. I was sought after to finish the projects with the tightest deadlines, and the projects that had the most irregularly shaped models. I was leaned on so heavily because I didn’t get flustered under pressure, because I was reliable, and because they knew that if they set a deadline, I would meet it. The lead in my department saw me as his second in command, stating that if he wasn’t available, I should be the go-to guy for anything.
Ultimately, that brings me to now, I’m still learned Maya, still trying to get better, and with any free time, I’m trying to branch out and learn new software. I’m still doing freelance projects for clients back in Newfoundland and other provinces in Canada, and in the little time left, even working on personal projects
